Kids of the Avocado Roll: a cheap way to get yr vegan Japanese fix!
I have been encouraged to post a simple little thang, a snack of truly wond’ros proportions (nutritionally, not physically!), and minimal cost.
In Australia there is a whole lot of Japanese fast food places serving cheap nori rolls to an insatiable population (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi#Makizushi, really avocado and cucumber and mushroom Futomaki, according to the article). It seems that, despite all the infinite innovation of modern American capitalism, the US is yet to catch on to this lusciousness! Somebody is gunna get rich rich rich!
To make these little suckers at home is awesome, but not for everybody.
The other day, while I was on my 24hr rice party people diet, a cheap way to make this luscious-stuffs was found (usually the ingredients in the real rolls are quite expensive outside of asian grocers), although it is kind of restricted to areas near Trader Joe’s stores. Needless to say, it is gluten free and vegan!!
Here it is:
Avocado Rolls for cheap nomz
1 packet of Trader Joe’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks ($0.99 per pack)
some cooked white or brown (respect yourself!!) rice
Mash the avocado through the rice and season. Smear or dump a big spoonful of the mash onto a seaweed sheet. Roll it up. Stuff it in your mouth!
A really healthy, cheap and mobile snack/meal! It is an amazing road-trip food, so light and healthy-feeling, but satisfyingly filling. Gone are the days of vomitous, queesy road-trips fueled by nasty confectionary (you know I don’t mean ChickoStix!!) and corn chips! Roll on! Health breakdown: This is ridiculously good! Amazing protein and dietary fibre from the brown rice and avocado, awesome nutrients from the algae, it is enough to make a man weep. Vitamins A, B (a whole slew of these), C, E, and K, Phosphorus, Calcium, Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Copper, Selenium, Potassium all present at high levels, as well as those omega oils in the avocado. Who said you need animal products to ROCK??!! \v/
