video of the week: time banks

This is one of the coolest ideas I have ever heard of, and delivered by a down-to-earth, nurturing type of guy.

Essentially, where a lot of people have time on thier hands, but no money to buy services, people have begun rebuilding neighbourhood ties, and trade services with one another hour-for-hour via a time bank. A plumber fixes someone’s toilet for two hours, earning two hours of service from other members of the bank, a babysitter or lawyer etc.

This guy really is amazing. Apologies to those who saw this on my gmail buzz way back in July.

More information can be found at and the Alternet article I first saw this on is at,_depression-era_time_banks_offer_an_alternative_way_to_earn?page=entire

I have since unsubscribed from Alternet because of their biased and vitriolic approach to politicised journalism, but I am so glad I subscribed as it led me to this!
